'Twas the night before Christmas and all was not well in the Grand Theft Auto house, for this is when the source code for Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) was reportedly leaked and shared on several online channels, including the dark web.
News of the leak comes after a slew of data, including the source codes of GTA 5 and GTA 6, was stolen during a hack on Rockstar, the creators of GTA, in September 2022. Soon after, more than 100 GB of data across various Rockstar projects was released into the wild. Some data from the yet-to-be-released GTA 6 was part of that leak and now it's the turn of GTA 5, with nearly 120 items, including screenshots, development videos, and various documents believed to be part of the release.
According to vx-underground, the person responsible for the GTA 5 leak "claim to have received the source code August, 2023" and their motivation was to "combat scamming in the GTA 5 modding scene, many people were allegedly scammed by people claiming to have the GTA 5 source code."
TakeTwo Interactive, the owner of Rockstar, is taking down links leading to the source code. They have also stated that the 2022 leak of GTA 6 data won't delay its release, which is expected to be in 2025.
