On October 4, the LEGO homepage was breached and an image of golden coins bearing the company logo appeared, along with a banner claiming that the "Lego coin" has been officially released. The promise of "secret rewards" was even used to entice anyone thinking of buying them.
It was, of course, a scam. Lego wasn't launching an official cryptocurrency coin and clicking on the accompanying button took those interested to a cryptocurrency website where "LEGO Tokens" could be bought with Ethereum.
The scam was first brought to light on social media, in particular by LEGO superfan, The Brick Fan, and users on the Lego subreddit, where one informed: "Around 9pm EDT we became aware that the Lego.com website was edited with a message about a "new coin" and had links to a crypto currency website ..."
LEGO responded to the social media alerts and was quick to remove the bogus banner and links and replace them with the legit banner and links to authorised LEGO products. LEGO stated that "no user accounts have been compromised ... and the cause has been identified ... we are implementing measures to prevent this from happening again."
LEGO hasn't outlined the "cause" or the measures it is implementing.
