A buffer overflow exists in the HELO command in Trend Micro Interscan VirusWall SMTP gateway 3.23/3.3 for NT, which may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code.

  1. Remove

    Remove Trend Micro InterScan VirusWall SMTP gateway 3.23/3.3 for NT from your environment.

    Uninstall the Interscan VirusWall SMTP gateway component if it is not required in your environment to eliminate exposure to the HELO buffer overflow.

  2. Compensating control

    Restrict network access to the Trend Micro InterScan VirusWall SMTP gateway to trusted mail hosts and administrative IPs only (use firewall/ACLs or network segmentation). Block or filter incoming SMTP connections from untrusted sources to prevent exploitation of the HELO buffer overflow.

  3. Operational

    If the SMTP gateway cannot be removed immediately, isolate the host, monitor logs and network traffic for signs of compromise, and if compromise is suspected rebuild the system from known-good media and rotate any potentially exposed credentials.
