Buffer overflow in POP3 and IMAP servers in the MERCUR mail server suite allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service.

Remediation

Recommended actions to resolve this vulnerability, in priority order.

  1. Remove

    Remove Mercury Mail Server from your environment.

    Uninstall the Mercury Mail Server (and its POP3/IMAP components) if those services are not required, to eliminate the vulnerable software from the environment.

  2. Configuration

    Disable the IMAP4 server component in the MERCUR/Mercury mail server suite to prevent remote exploitation of the reported buffer overflow.

  3. Configuration

    Disable the POP3 server component in the MERCUR/Mercury mail server suite to prevent remote exploitation of the reported buffer overflow.

    Atrium Software Mercur Pop3 Server service_enabled = false
  4. Compensating control

    Restrict or block network access to POP3 and IMAP services for the affected MERCUR/Mercury mail server instances at the network perimeter (firewall/ACL) until a vendor-supplied fix is available.
