CVE-2024-2323: Password Brute Force via Password History Validation in Multiple WSO2 Products Allows User Account Discovery

Published Oct 20, 2026
·
Updated

The RemoteUserStoreManagerService does not sufficiently validate password change attempts when the password history validation feature is enabled. This oversight allows an attacker to repeatedly attempt password guesses for a user account without being adequately restricted.

Exploiting this vulnerability enables an attacker to discover a user's password through brute force, leading to account impersonation. The success rate of such an attack is influenced by the complexity of the targeted user's password, with simpler passwords increasing the likelihood of compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who is exposed to this issue?

Deployments using WSO2 RemoteUserStoreManagerService with the password history validation feature enabled are exposed. The vulnerability can be targeted remotely and does not require prior authentication or user interaction.

2

What does an attacker need to exploit it?

An attacker needs the ability to submit repeated password-change attempts targeting a user account. Exploitation relies on guessing the target user's password; weaker or simpler passwords are more likely to be discovered.

3

What is the impact if exploitation succeeds?

A successful brute-force attack can reveal a user's password, allowing the attacker to impersonate that user. The reported impact includes limited confidentiality and integrity effects, with no stated availability impact.
