CVE-2025-71274: rpmsg: core: fix race in driver_override_show() and use core helper
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
rpmsg: core: fix race in driveroverrideshow() and use core helper
The driveroverrideshow function reads the driveroverride string without holding the devicelock. However, the store function modifies and frees the string while holding the devicelock. This creates a race condition where the string can be freed by the store function while being read by the show function, leading to a use-after-free.
To fix this, replace the rpmsgstringattr macro with explicit show and store functions. The new driveroverridestore uses the standard driversetoverride helper. Since the introduction of driversetoverride, the comments in include/linux/rpmsg.h have stated that this helper must be used to set or clear driveroverride, but the implementation was not updated until now.
Because driversetoverride modifies and frees the string while holding the devicelock, the new driveroverrideshow now correctly holds the devicelock during the read operation to prevent the race.
Additionally, since rpmsgstringattr has only ever been used for driveroverride, removing the macro simplifies the code.

Frequently Asked Questions
What access does an attacker need to trigger this issue?
The provided CVSS vector indicates local access and low privileges are required. No user interaction is required.
Which systems are exposed to the race?
Systems are exposed when the rpmsg driver's driver_override sysfs attribute can be read while another operation stores, clears, or changes that attribute. The race occurs because the prior show path read the string without device_lock while the store path could modify and free it under that lock.
What is the impact if exploitation succeeds?
The issue can cause a use-after-free. The supplied severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
What should be checked to determine whether the fix is present?
Check whether the kernel's rpmsg driver_override implementation uses explicit show and store functions, with driver_override_show holding device_lock during the read and driver_override_store using driver_set_override. The listed stable references identify fixes for this issue.
