Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who can exploit this issue?

A staff user who has permission to view staff invites can exploit it. The user may have a lower-privileged role than the role assigned to a pending invite.

2

What must be present for privilege escalation to occur?

There must be a pending staff invite for a role with higher privileges than the attacking staff user. The attacker can discover that invite's secret token and accept the invite to gain the higher role.

3

Are default installations affected?

The provided information does not identify whether the affected invite-view permission is granted in Ghost's default role configuration. Exposure depends on whether a staff user can view staff invites and whether higher-privilege pending invites exist.

4

What versions should be remediated?

Ghost versions from 4.39.0 through 6.64.0 are affected according to the advisory. Upgrade to version 6.64.0, which fixes the issue.

5

What can be done if an immediate upgrade is not possible?

Restrict the ability to view staff invites to only fully trusted staff, and avoid leaving pending invites for higher-privilege roles available to lower-privileged staff. Review pending invites and the staff users who can access them.
