CVE-2026-109370: Document Embedder <= 2.4.0 - Authenticated (Contributor+) Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via 'documentSource.doc' Block Attribute
The Document Embedder – let visitors read files without downloading plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'content (postcontent containing block JSON documentSource.doc)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The payload is triggered specifically when the victim clicks the embedded document's Download button, which causes the detrackdownload AJAX fallback path to programmatically create an anchor with the attacker-controlled href and call .click() — a condition reached because supplying docId=0 causes canreaddocument() to return false, bypassing the normal download flow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can exploit this issue?
An attacker needs an authenticated WordPress account with Contributor-level access or higher. They must be able to add attacker-controlled content to a page using the plugin’s document embed block.
What user action triggers the injected script?
The payload does not execute merely when the affected page is opened. It is triggered when a visitor clicks the embedded document’s Download button.
What conditions cause the vulnerable download fallback to be used?
The fallback path is reached when the embedded block supplies docId=0, causing can_read_document() to return false. That path creates and programmatically clicks an anchor whose href is attacker-controlled.
