Grav 1.7.53 before 1.7.53.5 and 2.0.0-rc.8 before 2.2.2 contains a resource exhaustion vulnerability that allows anonymous visitors to bypass the system.images.maxpixels limit when system.images.urlactions is enabled. Attackers can send single-dimension or percentage forceResize, zoomCrop, or chained image actions to make GD allocate multi-gigabyte canvases, exhausting server memory and taking the site down.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which deployments are exposed to this denial-of-service issue?

Grav installations running versions before 1.7.53.5 in the 1.7.53 branch, or versions from 2.0.0-rc.8 before 2.2.2, are affected when system.images.url_actions is enabled.

2

Does exploitation require an account or user interaction?

No. An anonymous remote visitor can trigger the issue without credentials or user interaction by sending crafted image-action requests.

3

What requests can exhaust server memory?

Single-dimension or percentage forceResize and zoomCrop actions, as well as chained image actions, can bypass the image pixel limit and cause GD to allocate multi-gigabyte canvases.

4

What can be done if upgrading is not immediately possible?

Disable system.images.url_actions to prevent the vulnerable URL-based image actions from being used.
