CVE-2026-115707: Insertion of Sensitive Information into Externally-Accessible File or Directory in Elastic Cloud Enterprise (ECE) Leading to Privilege Escalation
Insertion of Sensitive Information into Externally-Accessible File or Directory (CWE-538) in Elastic Cloud Enterprise (ECE) can lead to privilege escalation via Retrieve Embedded Sensitive Data (CAPEC-37). After the ECE certificate rotation procedure runs, data that it retains contains platform credentials and certificate authority private keys, and lower-privileged platform components can read this data. An attacker who controls any host in the installation can use this data to get full control of the ECE control plane and of the deployments that it manages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to exploitation?
ECE installations are exposed if an attacker controls any host in the installation. The issue enables that attacker to obtain data readable by lower-privileged platform components after the certificate rotation procedure has run.
What must an attacker be able to do to exploit this issue?
The attacker must control a host in the ECE installation. They can then retrieve retained data containing platform credentials and certificate authority private keys.
What is the potential impact after successful exploitation?
An attacker can gain full control of the ECE control plane and the deployments managed by it. The disclosed impact includes compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
How can I determine whether my environment may already be affected?
Determine whether the ECE certificate rotation procedure has run and whether lower-privileged platform components can read the retained rotation data. The advisory states that this data contains platform credentials and certificate authority private keys.
