CVE-2026-120673: Rust Driver 3.9.1 exports CSFLE plaintext in `db.query.text` before encrypting the command

Published Nov 3, 2026
·
Updated

A component of the MongoDB Rust Driver that records diagnostic tracing data can capture command content before automatic client-side field level encryption is applied. In deployments that turn on the optional tracing capability together with automatic in-use encryption, a party with read access to the application's exported trace data may obtain field values that the application designated for encryption, without access to the encryption keys. This may result in unintended disclosure of data.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who is exposed to this issue?

Deployments using the MongoDB Rust Driver with both optional diagnostic tracing and automatic client-side field level encryption enabled are exposed. An attacker or other party would need read access to the application's exported trace data.

2

Does an attacker need access to the encryption keys?

No. The issue can expose field values designated for encryption through trace data without access to the encryption keys.

3

What configuration condition triggers the exposure?

The exposure occurs when diagnostic tracing is enabled alongside automatic in-use encryption. The affected tracing component can record command content before encryption is applied.
