CVE-2026-31606: usb: gadget: f_hid: don't call cdev_init while cdev in use
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
usb: gadget: fhid: don't call cdevinit while cdev in use
When calling unbind, then bind again, cdevinit reinitialized the cdev, even though there may still be references to it. That's the case when the /dev/hidg device is still opened. This obviously unsafe behavior like oopes.
This fixes this by using cdevalloc to put the cdev on the heap. That way, we can simply allocate a new one in hidgbind.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The HID gadget device must be unbound and then bound again while a /dev/hidg* device remains open. The unsafe reinitialization occurs because the character device may still have active references during that rebind.
Who is most likely exposed?
Systems using the Linux USB HID gadget function are relevant, particularly where /dev/hidg* devices can be kept open while gadget configuration is changed. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges; no user interaction is required.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
The issue can cause a denial of service through unsafe character-device reinitialization while references remain active. The supplied severity vector indicates no confidentiality or integrity impact.
What can be done before a fix is applied?
Avoid unbinding and rebinding the HID gadget while any /dev/hidg* device is open. Ensure processes using those device nodes have closed them before changing the gadget binding.
