CVE-2026-43079: perf/x86/intel/uncore: Skip discovery table for offline dies
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
perf/x86/intel/uncore: Skip discovery table for offline dies
This warning can be triggered if NUMA is disabled and the system boots with fewer CPUs than the number of CPUs in die 0.
WARNING: CPU: 9 PID: 7257 at uncore.c:1157 uncorepcipmuregister+0x136/0x160 [inteluncore]
Currently, the discovery table continues to be parsed even if all CPUs in the associated die are offline. This can lead to an array overflow at "pmu->boxes[die] = box" in uncorepcipmuregister(), which may trigger the warning above or cause other issues.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to encounter this issue?
Systems using the Linux kernel's Intel uncore performance-monitoring support are implicated when NUMA is disabled and the system boots with fewer CPUs than are present in die 0. The affected software list includes Linux kernel packages and several Ubuntu kernel variants, including realtime, Azure, GCP, Azure FDE, RISC-V, GKE, and GKEOP packages.
What conditions lead to the failure?
The condition occurs when the discovery table is parsed for a die whose CPUs are all offline. In the described boot configuration, this can overflow the pmu->boxes array during uncore PCI PMU registration.
How might an affected system show symptoms?
An affected system may emit a CPU warning in uncore_pci_pmu_register(), such as the reported warning at uncore.c:1157. The array overflow may also cause other unspecified issues.
What mitigation is indicated by the resolved change?
The resolved change skips discovery-table parsing for offline dies. Until a kernel containing that change is used, avoiding the described combination of disabled NUMA and booting with fewer CPUs than die 0 has may avoid triggering the condition.
