Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Linux kernel with offloaded BPF maps or programs are exposed when their information is queried while the associated network namespace is being destroyed. The listed affected software includes Ubuntu linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-oracle, linux-raspi, linux-realtime, and linux-azure-fde.
What conditions are required to trigger the use-after-free?
An attacker or local process needs to query information for an offloaded BPF map or program during a race with teardown of the network namespace associated with the offload network device. The namespace reference count must have reached zero when the info-fill code attempts to acquire a reference.
How can the issue be identified from system behavior?
The vulnerable race can trigger a kernel warning or failure reporting "refcount_t: addition on 0; use-after-free." It occurs in the offloaded map or program information query path during network namespace destruction.
What behavior should occur after the fix when the namespace is being destroyed?
The info query fails with -ENOENT if the network namespace reference count is already zero. This avoids incrementing a zero refcount and prevents use of the destroyed namespace.
