CVE-2026-53381: virtiofs: fix UAF on submount umount

Published Jul 19, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

virtiofs: fix UAF on submount umount

iput() called from fusereleaseend() can Oops if the super block has already been destroyed. Normally this is prevented by waiting for numwaiting to go down to zero before commencing with super block shutdown.

This only works, however, for the last submount instance, as the wait counter is per connection, not per superblock.

Revert to using synchronous release requests for the autosubmounts case, which is virtiofs only at this time.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What conditions are required to trigger this issue?

The issue involves virtiofs auto-submounts being unmounted. It occurs when an inode release path calls iput() after the relevant superblock has already been destroyed, creating a use-after-free condition.

2

Is this remotely exploitable?

The CVSS vector identifies local attack access and low privileges required, with no user interaction. The provided data does not indicate a network-reachable attack path.

3

What is the impact if exploitation succeeds?

The vulnerability is rated high severity with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts in the supplied CVSS vector. The immediate failure described is an Oops caused by accessing a destroyed superblock.

4

What mitigation is described by the fix?

The fix uses synchronous release requests for the auto_submounts case, which the description states is currently specific to virtiofs. This prevents release processing from reaching iput() after superblock shutdown.
