CVE-2026-64388: smb/client: fix chown/chgrp with SMB3 POSIX Extensions
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
smb/client: fix chown/chgrp with SMB3 POSIX Extensions
Ownership (chown) and group (chgrp) modifications were being ignored when mounting with SMB3 POSIX Extensions unless CIFSMOUNTCIFSACL or CIFSMOUNTMODEFROMSID were also explicitly set.
Fix this by checking for posixextensions in cifssetattrnounix() when updating UID and GID, ensuring that idmodetocifsacl() is called to map and set the ownership/group information on the server.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are affected by the incorrect ownership handling?
Linux systems mounting SMB shares with SMB3 POSIX Extensions are affected when neither CIFS_MOUNT_CIFS_ACL nor CIFS_MOUNT_MODE_FROM_SID is explicitly set for the mount.
What access does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The CVSS vector indicates local access and low privileges are required. No user interaction is required.
What can be done if the fix cannot be applied immediately?
Explicitly enabling CIFS_MOUNT_CIFS_ACL or CIFS_MOUNT_MODE_FROM_SID avoids the described condition in which chown and chgrp modifications are ignored.
How can administrators identify the vulnerable behavior?
On an affected SMB3 POSIX Extensions mount without either of those options, ownership or group changes requested through chown or chgrp may be ignored by the server.
