CVE-2026-82944: Buffer Overflow in CoE SDO Upload Multi-Segment Data Transfers
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains a vulnerability in multi-segment data transfers where a malicious device can overflow memory buffers. The software checks the total size only once at the beginning, but doesn't track the cumulative size as multiple segments arrive. An attacker can declare a small initial size to pass validation, then send additional segments that exceed the allocated buffer. This allows the attacker to write controlled data beyond buffer boundaries, potentially enabling code execution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can exploit this issue?
An attacker needs to control or introduce a malicious EtherCAT device that participates in CoE SDO upload multi-segment data transfers with a vulnerable SOEM implementation. The supplied CVSS vector indicates no privileges or user interaction are required, but attack access is adjacent rather than network-based.
Which deployments are affected?
SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier are affected when they process multi-segment CoE SDO upload transfers. The data does not state whether this functionality is enabled or exercised by default.
What is the impact of a successful exploit?
A malicious device can send more segment data than the buffer allocated from its initially declared size, causing a controlled out-of-bounds write. This may enable code execution and can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
