CVE-2026-88357: High severity nDPI nDPI vulnerability
nDPI 5.1.0 contains a memory access issue in the DNS dissector and serializer deserialization code. Specially crafted network input can cause byte-buffer addresses at odd offsets to be cast to uint16t or wider integer pointers and directly dereferenced without alignment checks. This results in undefined behavior and can cause process termination in UBSan-instrumented builds or on strict-alignment architectures, leading to denial of service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which deployments are most likely to experience an impact?
Deployments that process attacker-controlled DNS network traffic through the affected dissector or serializer deserialization paths are exposed. UBSan-instrumented builds and systems with strict alignment requirements are specifically susceptible to process termination.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the issue?
An attacker needs to provide specially crafted network input that causes byte-buffer addresses at odd offsets to be treated as uint16_t or wider integer pointers and dereferenced.
What is the practical impact of a successful trigger?
The misaligned memory access produces undefined behavior. It can terminate the affected process in UBSan-instrumented builds or on strict-alignment architectures, resulting in denial of service.
