CVE-2026-93053: speakup: keyhelp: guard letter_offsets possible out-of-range indexing
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
speakup: keyhelp: guard letteroffsets possible out-of-range indexing
helpinit() builds letteroffsets[] by using the first byte of each function name as an index via (start & 31) - 1. If functionnames are overridden from sysfs (root) with a name starting outside [a–z], the index underflows or exceeds the array, leading to OOB write.
Function names can be overridden with the following commands as root:
modprobe speakupsoft echo "0 bad" > /sys/accessibility/speakup/i18n/functionnames # then press Insert+2 on /dev/tty
This fix checks the first letter in helpinit(), and if it is not in the [a–z] range the function returns an error to the caller. Eventually this error is propagated to drivers/accessibility/speakup/main.c:2217, which causes a bleep sound.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger the out-of-bounds write?
An attacker needs root privileges to override Speakup function names through the sysfs function_names interface. The described trigger also requires the speakup_soft module to be loaded and a Speakup key sequence to be invoked.
What configuration causes the issue?
The issue is triggered when a root user writes a function name whose first character is outside the lowercase a–z range, such as "_bad", to the Speakup i18n function_names sysfs entry. The unsafe value is processed when Speakup initializes key help.
What happens after the fix when an invalid function name is supplied?
The initialization rejects function names whose first letter is not in the lowercase a–z range and returns an error. That error reaches the Speakup main code, which emits a bleep sound.
