CVE-2026-98264: ALSA: virtio: reset device before deleting virtqueues

Published Oct 6, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ALSA: virtio: reset device before deleting virtqueues

virtsndremove() and virtsndfreeze() delete the virtqueues before resetting the device. delvqs() frees the vring backing, but does not provide a generic device quiesce operation. In particular, modern virtio-pci keeps enabled queues active until the device is reset.

Reset the device before deleting the virtqueues so it can no longer access the vring memory when that memory is released. This also covers probe failures after DRIVEROK, which unwind through virtsndremove().

Affected Software

1 affected component
Linux Linux kernel

Remediation

Recommended actions to resolve this vulnerability, in priority order.

  1. Compensating control

Reset the virtio device before deleting its virtqueues, including in virtsnd_remove() and virtsnd_freeze(), so the device cannot access vring memory after it is released.
