Frequently Asked Questions
When can this issue be triggered?
It occurs when dma_device_put() drops the final reference to a DMA device, allowing the device and its channels to be freed while dma_chan_put() still accesses the channel's device data for a subsequent module reference release.
How can I identify whether this problem has occurred?
KASAN can report a slab use-after-free in dma_chan_put(), with the invalid read occurring after the DMA device is freed. The reported trace may include dma_device_release(), kfree(), dma_chan_put(), and dmaengine_put().
What does the fix change?
The fix saves the module owner before releasing the device reference. This prevents the later module_put() operation from dereferencing chan->device after the DMA device may have been freed.
