CVE-2026-98783: drm/mediatek: Add missing IS_ERR check for ovl_adaptor platform device

Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/mediatek: Add missing ISERR check for ovladaptor platform device

platformdeviceregisterdata() can fail and return an ERRPTR, but the return value is used without checking, leading to an invalid pointer being stored in ddpcomp[].dev and passed to componentmatchadd() and mtkddpcompinit(), which could result in a kernel crash.

Add an ISERR() check to jump to the error handling path on failure.

Remediation

Recommended actions to resolve this vulnerability, in priority order.

  1. Compensating control

Add an IS_ERR() check for the return value of platform_device_register_data() before storing it in ddp_comp[].dev or passing it to component_match_add(), and jump to the error-handling path when it indicates failure.
