GHSA-4mpw-cpwj-hxxj: High severity nuget/Microsoft.NETCore.App.Runtime.win-x86 vulnerability
Executive summary
Microsoft is releasing this security advisory to provide information about a vulnerability in System.Net.Sockets. This advisory also provides guidance on what developers can do to update their applications to remove this vulnerability.
On Windows, reusing a SocketAsyncEventArgs instance across IPv4 and IPv6 datagram sockets can retain an undersized cached native address buffer, allowing an unauthenticated out-of-bounds write during ReceiveFromAsync.

Advisory FAQ
How do I know if I am affected?
If using a package listed in affected packages, you're exposed to the vulnerability.
How do I fix the issue?
1. To fix the issue please install the latest version of .NET. If you have installed one or more .NET SDKs through Visual Studio, Visual Studio will prompt you to update Visual Studio, which will also update your .NET SDKs. 2. If your application references the vulnerable package, update the package reference to the patched version. You can list the versions you have installed by running the dotnet --info command.
Once you have installed the updated runtime or SDK, restart your apps for the update to take effect.
Additionally, if you've deployed self-contained applications targeting any of the impacted versions, these applications are also vulnerable and must be recompiled and redeployed.

Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which deployments are exposed?
Exposure is limited to Windows systems, across all architectures, running Microsoft .NET projects that use an affected version of the listed Microsoft.NETCore.App.Runtime.win packages. The affected package variants named are win-arm, win-arm64, win-x64, and win-x86.
What application behavior is required for exploitation?
The application must reuse a SocketAsyncEventArgs instance across both IPv4 and IPv6 datagram sockets and use ReceiveFromAsync. The advisory describes the resulting out-of-bounds write as unauthenticated.
How can teams determine whether an application is affected?
Review Windows applications' dependencies for the listed Microsoft.NETCore.App.Runtime.win package variants and compare their installed versions with the affected-version list in the advisory. Also review socket-handling code for reuse of the same SocketAsyncEventArgs instance between IPv4 and IPv6 datagram sockets.
What should be done if the application uses the affected socket pattern?
Update the application using the advisory's package guidance to remove the vulnerability. No separate configuration workaround or compensating control is specified in the provided advisory data.
