Advisory FAQ
<a name="how-affected"></a>How do I know if I am affected?
If using a package listed in affected packages, you're exposed to the vulnerability.
<a name="how-fix"></a>How do I fix the issue?
1. To fix the issue please install the latest version of .NET. If you have installed one or more .NET SDKs through Visual Studio, Visual Studio will prompt you to update Visual Studio, which will also update your .NET SDKs. 2. If your application references the vulnerable package, update the package reference to the patched version. You can list the versions you have installed by running the dotnet --info command.
Once you have installed the updated runtime or SDK, restart your apps for the update to take effect.
Additionally, if you've deployed self-contained applications targeting any of the impacted versions, these applications are also vulnerable and must be recompiled and redeployed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which applications are realistically exposed to this issue?
Microsoft .NET projects using System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs versions 10.0.0 through 10.0.12 are affected if they call SignedCms.CheckSignature on attacker-controlled X.509 data. The affected platforms are Windows, Linux, and macOS on all architectures.
What does an attacker need to exploit the vulnerability?
An attacker needs to cause the application to process attacker-controlled X.509 data through SignedCms.CheckSignature. The advisory characterizes the CPU exhaustion as unauthenticated, and the CVSS vector indicates no privileges or user interaction are required.
How can I remediate the issue?
Update System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs to version 10.0.13. The advisory lists versions 10.0.0 through 10.0.12 as affected.
How can I determine whether an application is already at risk?
Check whether the project depends on an affected System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs version and whether its code invokes SignedCms.CheckSignature on X.509 data that can be supplied by an untrusted party. The reported impact is quadratic CPU consumption, which can result in denial of service.
