Updated

SemanticMediaWiki from 3.2.0 before 7.3.1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with the smw-schemaedit right to inject markup through an unescaped property group schema canonicalname. Attackers can save a schema whose canonicalname holds script markup, which GroupFormatter renders unescaped in Special:Browse headings, executing JavaScript in viewers' sessions including administrators.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who can exploit this vulnerability?

An attacker needs an account with the smw-schemaedit right. They must be able to save a property group schema with script markup in its canonical_name field.

2

Which users are at risk when the payload is triggered?

Anyone viewing the affected Special:Browse group heading can have JavaScript execute in their session. This includes administrators who browse the malicious schema output.

3

How can I check whether an instance is affected?

Review property group schemas created or editable by users with smw-schemaedit for canonical_name values containing markup or script content. Then check whether those schemas are rendered in Special:Browse headings.
