Advisory FAQ

<a name="how-affected"></a>How do I know if I am affected?

If using a package listed in affected packages, developers exposed to the vulnerability.

<a name="how-fix"></a>How do I fix the issue?

1. To fix the issue please install the latest version of .NET. If developers have installed one or more .NET SDKs through Visual Studio, Visual Studio will prompt them to update Visual Studio, which will also update their .NET SDKs. 2. If their application references the vulnerable nuget package, update the package reference to the patched version. Developers can list the versions they have installed by running the dotnet --info command.

Once developers have installed the updated runtime or SDK, they should restart their apps for the update to take effect.

Additionally, if they've deployed self-contained applications targeting any of the impacted versions, these applications are also vulnerable and must be recompiled and redeployed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems and applications are in scope?

The advisory applies to Windows systems on all architectures. It affects Microsoft .NET projects using the listed Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime packages in affected versions when they use WPF on .NET 8, .NET 9, or .NET 10.

2

What must occur for exploitation?

An application must parse specially crafted XAML input, and the CVSS vector indicates user interaction is required. The vector also indicates no attacker privileges are required.

3

What is the impact if exploitation succeeds?

An attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. Confidentiality, integrity, and availability can all be affected at the level accessible to that user.

4

What remediation is identified by the advisory?

Developers should update affected applications to remove the vulnerability by moving affected packages to their patched versions. The provided data does not include the specific affected or patched version numbers.
