Advisory FAQ
<a name="how-affected"></a>How do I know if I am affected?
If using a package listed in affected packages, you're exposed to the vulnerability.
<a name="how-fix"></a>How do I fix the issue?
1. To fix the issue please install the latest version of .NET. If you have installed one or more .NET SDKs through Visual Studio, Visual Studio will prompt you to update Visual Studio, which will also update your .NET SDKs. 2. If your application references the vulnerable package, update the package reference to the patched version. You can list the versions you have installed by running the dotnet --info command.
Once you have installed the updated runtime or SDK, restart your apps for the update to take effect.
Additionally, if you've deployed self-contained applications targeting any of the impacted versions, these applications are also vulnerable and must be recompiled and redeployed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected platforms are Linux and macOS, across all architectures. The listed affected runtime packages cover Linux x64, ARM64, ARM, musl variants, and macOS x64 and ARM64.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
Exploitation is local and requires low privileges; no user interaction is required. The issue involves manipulation of Unix named-mutex and shared-memory paths through insecure global directories, symlink races, and unsafe permission changes.
What could a successful exploit allow?
A local attacker may be able to truncate or overwrite files, broaden directory permissions, or elevate privileges. The advisory rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
How can teams determine whether an application is affected?
Review the application's resolved Microsoft.NETCore.App.Runtime package dependencies for the Linux or macOS runtime package matching its deployment platform and architecture. The advisory states that projects using an affected package version are impacted; compare the resolved version with the affected and patched versions in the advisory.
