REDHAT-BUG-2423148: Low severity libssh libssh vulnerability

An insecure default configuration vulnerability exists in libssh on Windows systems where the library automatically loads configuration files from the C:\etc directory. Since this directory can be created and modified by unprivileged local users, an attacker can inject malicious SSH configuration or known-hosts entries. This enables local man-in-the-middle attacks, security downgrades of SSH connections, and manipulation of trusted host information. Exploitation requires only low privileges and no user interaction, posing a significant risk to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of SSH communications that rely on libssh.

  1. Compensating control

    On Windows hosts running libssh, ensure the C:\etc directory does not exist or is not writable by unprivileged users. If C:\etc is present, remove it if not required or set NTFS permissions so only trusted administrators/SYSTEM can create or modify files in C:\etc to prevent unprivileged local user creation/modification.

  2. Operational

    Audit C:\etc for SSH configuration and known-hosts entries that may have been injected (e.g., ssh configuration files and known_hosts). Remove any untrusted or malicious entries and restore legitimate files from trusted backups. If evidence of compromise is found, rotate affected SSH host keys and any credentials that may have been exposed.
