RHSA-2026:62269: Important: dracut security update

Published Sep 1, 2026
·
Updated

The dracut packages contain an event-driven initial RAM file system (initramfs) generator infrastructure based on the udev device manager. The virtual file system, initramfs, is loaded together with the kernel at boot time and initializes the system, so it can read and boot from the root partition.Security Fix(es): dracut: dracut: Root code execution via DHCP options command injection (CVE-2026-6893) dracut: dracut: root code execution via unescaped error message written to sourced emergency hook script in die() (CVE-2026-15816) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are most likely exposed to these issues?

Systems whose boot environment uses dracut are relevant, particularly where initramfs networking and DHCP are used, because one issue is triggered through DHCP options. The affected package set includes dracut-network as well as core dracut-related packages.

2

What level of access could successful exploitation provide?

Both listed fixes describe root code execution. Exploitation of the DHCP issue involves command injection through DHCP options, while the other issue involves an unescaped error message written into a sourced emergency hook script.

3

How can I determine whether my installed software is in scope?

Check whether the system has any of the listed packages installed: dracut, dracut-caps, dracut-config-generic, dracut-config-rescue, dracut-debuginfo, dracut-fips, dracut-fips-aesni, or dracut-network. The supplied advisory data does not include fixed package versions or configuration-specific exposure criteria.
