UBUNTU-CVE-2024-46854: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: dpaa: Pad packets to ETHZLEN When sending packets under 60 bytes, up to three bytes of the buffer following the data may be leaked. Avoid this by extending all packets to ETHZLEN, ensuring nothing is leaked in the padding. This bug can be reproduced by running $ ping -s 11 destination

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to exploit this issue?
An attacker needs local access with low privileges and must be able to cause the affected system to transmit Ethernet packets shorter than 60 bytes. The issue is reproducible with a small ICMP ping payload, such as ping -s 11 destination.
What information could be exposed?
Up to three bytes from the buffer following a short packet's data may be transmitted in Ethernet padding. The stated impact is limited to confidentiality; no integrity or availability impact is identified.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-oracle.
What mitigation is indicated by the fix?
The fix pads transmitted packets to ETH_ZLEN, preventing buffer contents from being included in padding. If patching cannot occur immediately, avoiding transmission of packets shorter than 60 bytes would address the described trigger condition.
