UBUNTU-CVE-2024-46859: Low severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: panasonic-laptop: Fix SINF array out of bounds accesses The panasonic laptop code in various places uses the SINF array with index values of 0 - SINFCURBRIGHT(0x0d) without checking that the SINF array is big enough. Not all panasonic laptops have this many SINF array entries, for example the Toughbook CF-18 model only has 10 SINF array entries. So it only supports the AC+DC brightness entries and mute. Check that the SINF array has a minimum size which covers all AC+DC brightness entries and refuse to load if the SINF array is smaller. For higher SINF indexes hide the sysfs attributes when the SINF array does not contain an entry for that attribute, avoiding show()/store() accessing the array out of bounds and add bounds checking to the probe() and resume() code accessing these.

In the platform/x86 panasonic-laptop code, verify that the SINF array is large enough to cover all AC+DC brightness entries and refuse to load if it is too small; hide sysfs attributes for higher SINF indexes when no corresponding entry exists, and add bounds checks in show(), store(), probe(), and resume() before accessing the array.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely affected?
Systems using the Panasonic laptop platform driver are relevant. Panasonic models with fewer SINF entries than the driver expects are affected; the Toughbook CF-18 is specifically identified as having only 10 entries.
What conditions lead to the out-of-bounds access?
The issue occurs when the driver accesses SINF indexes for brightness or other attributes that are not present on a laptop with a smaller SINF array. Higher-index sysfs attribute reads or writes, as well as probe and resume operations, can reach missing entries.
How does the fix prevent exposure on unsupported hardware?
The corrected driver refuses to load when the SINF array is too small to cover the required AC and DC brightness entries. It also hides sysfs attributes without corresponding SINF entries and adds bounds checks in probe and resume paths.
