UBUNTU-CVE-2024-47712: Use After Free

Published Oct 21, 2024
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: wilc1000: fix potential RCU dereference issue in wilcparsejoinbssparam In the wilcparsejoinbssparam function, the TSF field of the ies structure is accessed after the RCU read-side critical section is unlocked. According to RCU usage rules, this is illegal. Reusing this pointer can lead to unpredictable behavior, including accessing memory that has been updated or causing use-after-free issues. This possible bug was identified using a static analysis tool developed by myself, specifically designed to detect RCU-related issues. To address this, the TSF value is now stored in a local variable iestsf before the RCU lock is released. The param->tsflo field is then assigned using this local variable, ensuring that the TSF value is safely accessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

Ubuntu systems using the affected Linux kernel packages are in scope: linux, linux-azure, linux-aws, linux-gcp, linux-ibm, linux-oracle, linux-raspi, and linux-realtime. The issue is in the wilc1000 Wi-Fi driver.

2

What access would an attacker need to exploit this?

The supplied severity vector indicates local access, low attack complexity, high privileges required, and no user interaction. The reported impact is limited to availability, with no stated confidentiality or integrity impact.

3

What is the underlying failure mode?

The driver accesses the TSF field through an RCU-protected pointer after leaving the RCU read-side critical section. This can result in stale-memory access or use-after-free behavior if the referenced memory is updated or freed.
