UBUNTU-CVE-2024-47723: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jfs: fix out-of-bounds in dbNextAG() and diAlloc() In dbNextAG() , there is no check for the case where bmp->dbnumag is greater or same than MAXAG due to a polluted image, which causes an out-of-bounds. Therefore, a bounds check should be added in dbMount(). And in dbNextAG(), a check for the case where agpref is greater than bmp->dbnumag should be added, so an out-of-bounds exception should be prevented. Additionally, a check for the case where agno is greater or same than MAXAG should be added in diAlloc() to prevent out-of-bounds.

Add bounds checks in the JFS code: in diAlloc(), reject agno values greater than or equal to MAXAG; in dbNextAG(), reject agpref values greater than bmp->db_numag; and in dbMount(), validate that bmp->db_numag is less than MAXAG to prevent out-of-bounds access from polluted images.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when they process or mount a polluted JFS filesystem image. The affected package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs to cause the kernel to handle a polluted JFS image containing invalid allocation-group values. The supplied CVSS vector indicates network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction required.
What can happen if the issue is exploited?
The invalid JFS allocation-group values can trigger out-of-bounds accesses in dbNextAG() or diAlloc(). The provided severity vector rates integrity and availability impact as high, with no confidentiality impact.
How can I determine whether I may be affected?
Check whether the system runs one of the listed Ubuntu kernel package families and whether it mounts or otherwise processes JFS filesystem images, especially images from untrusted or potentially corrupted sources. The description does not provide fixed package versions, so version-based determination cannot be made from this data.
