UBUNTU-CVE-2024-49871: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Input: adp5589-keys - fix NULL pointer dereference We register a devm action to call adp5589clearconfig() and then pass the i2c client as argument so that we can call i2cgetclientdata() in order to get our device object. However, i2csetclientdata() is only being set at the end of the probe function which means that we'll get a NULL pointer dereference in case the probe function fails early.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel variant and the ADP5589 keypad input driver are relevant. The failure occurs during driver probe, so exposure depends on the driver being probed for the associated I2C device.
What conditions are required to trigger the crash?
The ADP5589 driver probe must fail early after its managed cleanup action is registered but before i2c_set_clientdata() has stored the device data. When cleanup runs in that state, it can dereference a NULL device pointer.
What is the likely operational impact?
The reported impact is availability loss: a NULL pointer dereference can crash the kernel during the affected driver's failed initialization path. The provided severity vector indicates local access, low attack complexity, and low privileges are required, with no confidentiality or integrity impact.
