UBUNTU-CVE-2024-49930: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Oct 21, 2024
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath11k: fix array out-of-bound access in SoC stats Currently, the ath11ksocdpstats::halreoerror array is defined with a maximum size of DPREODSTRINGMAX. However, the ath11kdpprocessrx() function access ath11ksocdpstats::halreoerror using the REO destination SRNG ring ID, which is incorrect. SRNG ring ID differ from normal ring ID, and this usage leads to out-of-bounds array access. To fix this issue, modify ath11kdpprocessrx() to use the normal ring ID directly instead of the SRNG ring ID to avoid out-of-bounds array access. Tested-on: QCN9074 hw1.0 PCI WLAN.HK.2.7.0.1-01744-QCAHKSWPLSILICONZ-1

Which systems are most likely exposed to this issue?

Systems using the ath11k Wi-Fi driver are the relevant population. The listed affected Ubuntu kernel packages are linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-gke, linux-gkeop, linux-riscv, linux-fips, and linux-hwe-edge.

2

What triggers the out-of-bounds access?

The issue is triggered when ath11k_dp_process_rx() handles receive processing and indexes hal_reo_error with a REO destination SRNG ring ID. That ID differs from the normal ring ID expected by the array, causing an out-of-bounds access.

3

What does the fix change?

The fix changes ath11k_dp_process_rx() to use the normal ring ID rather than the SRNG ring ID when accessing the SoC statistics array. This prevents indexing beyond the hal_reo_error array bounds.
