UBUNTU-CVE-2024-49974: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFSD: Limit the number of concurrent async COPY operations Nothing appears to limit the number of concurrent async COPY operations that clients can start. In addition, AFAICT each async COPY can copy an unlimited number of 4MB chunks, so can run for a long time. Thus IMO async COPY can become a DoS vector. Add a restriction mechanism that bounds the number of concurrent background COPY operations. Start simple and try to be fair -- this patch implements a per-namespace limit. An async COPY request that occurs while this limit is exceeded gets NFS4ERRDELAY. The requesting client can choose to send the request again after a delay or fall back to a traditional read/write style copy. If there is need to make the mechanism more sophisticated, we can visit that in future patches.

Implement a per-namespace limit on concurrent asynchronous NFSD COPY operations; return NFS4ERR_DELAY when a request exceeds the limit.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this denial-of-service issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu Linux kernel that provide NFS server functionality and permit clients to issue asynchronous NFS COPY operations are exposed. The issue is relevant to the listed Ubuntu kernel variants, including linux, linux-fips, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-realtime, and the listed cloud FIPS variants.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the issue?
An attacker needs NFS client access sufficient to start asynchronous COPY operations against the server. They can initiate many concurrent operations, and each operation can copy an unlimited number of 4 MB chunks and potentially run for a long time.
What happens after the fix when the asynchronous COPY limit is reached?
The kernel enforces a per-namespace limit on concurrent background COPY operations. Requests exceeding that limit receive NFS4ERR_DELAY; clients may retry after a delay or fall back to traditional read/write copying.
