UBUNTU-CVE-2024-49996: Buffer Overflow

Published Oct 21, 2024
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: Fix buffer overflow when parsing NFS reparse points ReparseDataLength is sum of the InodeType size and DataBuffer size. So to get DataBuffer size it is needed to subtract InodeType's size from ReparseDataLength. Function cifsstrndupfromutf16() is currentlly accessing buf->DataBuffer at position after the end of the buffer because it does not subtract InodeType size from the length. Fix this problem and correctly subtract variable len. Member InodeType is present only when reparse buffer is large enough. Check for ReparseDataLength before accessing InodeType to prevent another invalid memory access. Major and minor rdev values are present also only when reparse buffer is large enough. Check for reparse buffer size before calling reparsemkdev().

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What systems are exposed to this issue?

Ubuntu systems using the listed Linux kernel packages are in scope, including linux, linux-fips, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp-fips, and linux-realtime. Exposure requires the CIFS client to process NFS reparse-point data.

2

What would an attacker need to do to trigger the vulnerability?

An attacker would need to cause the CIFS client to parse a malformed NFS reparse point with an inconsistent ReparseDataLength. The vector is network-based and requires no attacker privileges, but user interaction is required according to the supplied severity vector.

3

What is the likely impact?

The flaw can cause an out-of-bounds buffer access while parsing the reparse-point buffer. The supplied vector indicates an availability impact, with no indicated impact on confidentiality or integrity.

4

What should be checked when assessing exposure?

Determine whether affected hosts use CIFS and access shares that may provide NFS reparse points. The vulnerable parsing paths involve DataBuffer length handling, InodeType access, and major/minor device-value parsing when the reparse buffer is too short.
