UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50031: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Although all perfmons are destroyed in v3dperfmonclosefile(), the active performance monitor's pointer (v3d->activeperfmon) is still retained. If kmscube is run again, the driver will attempt to stop the active performance monitor using the stale pointer in v3d->activeperfmon. However, this pointer is no longer valid because the previous process has already terminated, and all performance monitors associated with it have been destroyed and freed. To fix this, when the active performance monitor belongs to a given process, explicitly stop it before destroying and freeing it.

In the v3d driver, when the active performance monitor belongs to the closing process, explicitly stop it before destroying and freeing it, and clear the stale active performance monitor pointer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the Linux V3D DRM driver are implicated. The reported failure occurs while running kmscube with one or more performance monitors enabled through GALLIUM_HUD.
What level of access and conditions are required to trigger the failure?
The severity vector indicates local access, low privileges, no user interaction, high attack complexity, and an additional required attack condition. The supplied report specifically identifies kmscube running with GALLIUM_HUD performance monitoring enabled as the trigger scenario.
What is the observed impact if the issue is triggered?
The reported outcome is a kernel paging fault followed by an internal error/Oops and kernel panic. The severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
How can I determine whether a system has encountered this problem?
Look for kernel logs showing an "Unable to handle kernel paging request," a level 1 translation fault, and an "Internal error: Oops" or kernel panic while kmscube is running with GALLIUM_HUD performance monitors enabled. The example log also shows the v3d DRM module loaded.
