UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50041: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: Fix macvlan leak by synchronizing access to macfilterhash This patch addresses a macvlan leak issue in the i40e driver caused by concurrent access to vsi->macfilterhash. The leak occurs when multiple threads attempt to modify the macfilterhash simultaneously, leading to inconsistent state and potential memory leaks. To fix this, we now wrap the calls to i40edelmacfilter() and zeroing vf->defaultlanaddr.addr with spinlock/unlockbh(&vsi->macfilterhashlock), ensuring atomic operations and preventing concurrent access. Additionally, we add lockdepassertheld(&vsi->macfilterhashlock) in i40eaddmacfilter() to help catch similar issues in the future. Reproduction steps: 1. Spawn VFs and configure port vlan on them. 2. Trigger concurrent macvlan operations (e.g., adding and deleting portvlan and/or mac filters). 3. Observe the potential memory leak and inconsistent state in the macfilterhash. This synchronization ensures the integrity of the macfilterhash and prevents the described leak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the i40e network driver with virtual functions (VFs) and macvlan-related configuration are exposed when concurrent operations modify MAC filters or port VLAN settings. The affected Ubuntu kernel package list includes linux, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-gke, linux-riscv, linux-fips, and linux-azure-fde.
What conditions are needed to trigger the problem?
An attacker or local user needs the ability to cause concurrent macvlan operations while VFs are present and port VLANs are configured. The documented trigger involves adding or deleting port VLANs and/or MAC filters concurrently.
What is the impact if the issue is triggered?
Concurrent access can leave the i40e driver's mac_filter_hash in an inconsistent state and cause memory leaks. The supplied severity vector identifies local access, low attack complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, and high availability impact.
What can be done if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
Avoid concurrent macvlan, port VLAN, and MAC-filter changes on i40e VFs. In particular, limit or serialize operations that add or remove port VLANs or MAC filters while VFs are configured.
