UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50045: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: brnetfilter: fix panic with metadatadst skb Fix a kernel panic in the brnetfilter module when sending untagged traffic via a VxLAN device. This happens during the check for fragmentation in brnfdevqueuexmit. It is dependent on: 1) the brnetfilter module being loaded; 2) net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables set to 1; 3) a bridge with a VxLAN (single-vxlan-device) netdevice as a bridge port; 4) untagged frames with size higher than the VxLAN MTU forwarded/flooded When forwarding the untagged packet to the VxLAN bridge port, before the netfilter hooks are called, brhandleegressvlantunnel is called and changes the skbdst to the tunnel dst. The tunneldst is a metadata type of dst, i.e., skbvaliddst(skb) is false, and metadata->dst.dev is NULL. Then in the brnetfilter hooks, in brnfdevqueuexmit, there's a check for frames that needs to be fragmented: frames with higher MTU than the VxLAN device end up calling brnfipfragment, which in turns call ipskbdstmtu. The ipdstmtu tries to use the skbdst(skb) as if it was a valid dst with valid dst->dev, thus the crash. This case was never supported in the first place, so drop the packet instead. Drop untagged frames larger than the VxLAN MTU when they are forwarded or flooded to a bridge port using a single-VxLAN-device netdevice.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this panic?
Exposure requires the br_netfilter module to be loaded, net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables to be set to 1, and a bridge configured with a single VxLAN device as a bridge port. The affected traffic path is untagged traffic forwarded or flooded to that VxLAN port.
What traffic triggers the failure?
The panic occurs when an untagged frame larger than the VxLAN device MTU is forwarded or flooded through the bridge to the VxLAN port. The oversized frame reaches fragmentation handling after its destination metadata has been changed to a tunnel destination.
Is a default configuration necessarily affected?
The available information does not establish whether the required bridge netfilter setting is enabled by default. Systems are affected only when all listed module, sysctl, bridge, VxLAN, and traffic conditions are present.
What can be done if patching cannot happen immediately?
Avoid the triggering configuration and traffic path: do not use a single VxLAN device as a bridge port with br_netfilter and bridge-nf-call-iptables enabled for untagged traffic that can exceed the VxLAN MTU. Disabling the relevant bridge netfilter processing or preventing oversized untagged frames from being forwarded to the VxLAN port removes required trigger conditions.
How can an administrator identify potentially affected hosts?
Check whether br_netfilter is loaded, whether net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables is set to 1, and whether a bridge has a VxLAN device as a port. Hosts meeting those conditions should also be reviewed for untagged frames that may be larger than the VxLAN interface MTU and forwarded or flooded to that port.
