UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50095: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability

Published Nov 5, 2024
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/mad: Improve handling of timed out WRs of mad agent Current timeout handler of mad agent acquires/releases madagentpriv lock for every timed out WRs. This causes heavy locking contention when higher no. of WRs are to be handled inside timeout handler. This leads to softlockup with below trace in some use cases where rdma-cm path is used to establish connection between peer nodes Trace: ----- BUG: soft lockup - CPU#4 stuck for 26s! The new method acquires/ releases lock once to fetch the list and hence helps to reduce locking contetiong when processing higher no. of WRs

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are most likely to encounter this issue?

Systems using RDMA, particularly those using the RDMA connection manager (rdma-cm) to establish connections between peer nodes, are the relevant exposure group. The issue is associated with handling a high number of timed-out work requests.

2

What access does an attacker need?

The supplied severity vector indicates local attack access and low privileges are required. It also indicates an additional attack condition is present, while no user interaction is required.

3

How can I identify a possible occurrence?

A possible symptom is a kernel soft-lockup report involving a kworker thread and the ib_mad1 timeout_sends workqueue. The provided example shows a CPU stuck while processing timed-out MAD sends.

4

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS cloud variants.
