UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50096: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Nov 5, 2024
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nouveau/dmem: Fix vulnerability in migratetoram upon copy error The nouveaudmemcopyone function ensures that the copy push command is sent to the device firmware but does not track whether it was executed successfully. In the case of a copy error (e.g., firmware or hardware failure), the copy push command will be sent via the firmware channel, and nouveaudmemcopyone will likely report success, leading to the migratetoram function returning a dirty HIGHUSER page to the user. This can result in a security vulnerability, as a HIGHUSER page that may contain sensitive or corrupted data could be returned to the user. To prevent this vulnerability, we allocate a zero page. Thus, in case of an error, a non-dirty (zero) page will be returned to the user.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

The issue applies to Ubuntu systems using the listed Linux kernel packages, including linux, linux-fips, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp-fips, and linux-realtime. Exploitation requires local access and low privileges.

2

What conditions are required for exploitation?

An attacker needs to be able to trigger GPU memory migration to RAM through the nouveau driver and a copy failure must occur, such as a firmware or hardware failure. No user interaction is required.

3

What is the security impact of a failed copy operation?

A failed device-memory copy could cause migrate_to_ram to return a dirty HIGH_USER page to user space. That page may contain sensitive or corrupted data, creating a confidentiality risk.

4

What does the fix change?

The fix allocates a zero page so that, when the copy fails, user space receives a non-dirty zero-filled page instead of a potentially sensitive or corrupted HIGH_USER page.
