UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50153: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: target: core: Fix null-ptr-deref in targetallocdevice() There is a null-ptr-deref issue reported by KASAN: BUG: KASAN: null-ptr-deref in targetallocdevice+0xbc4/0xbe0 [targetcoremod] ... kasanreport+0xb9/0xf0 targetallocdevice+0xbc4/0xbe0 [targetcoremod] coredevsetupvirtuallun0+0xef/0x1f0 [targetcoremod] targetcoreinitconfigfs+0x205/0x420 [targetcoremod] dooneinitcall+0xdd/0x4e0 ... entrySYSCALL64afterhwframe+0x76/0x7e In targetallocdevice(), if allocing memory for dev queues fails, then dev will be freed by dev->transport->freedevice(), but dev->transport is not initialized at that time, which will lead to a null pointer reference problem. Fixing this bug by freeing dev with hba->backend->ops->freedevice().

In target_alloc_device(), when allocation of device queues fails, free the device with hba->backend->ops->free_device() instead of dev->transport->free_device().
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The failure occurs when allocation of memory for device queues fails in target_alloc_device(). The affected path is in the kernel SCSI target core and results from attempting to free a device through an uninitialized transport pointer.
What is the practical impact if the issue is triggered?
The issue causes a kernel null-pointer dereference. The provided severity vector indicates local access, low privileges, no user interaction, and an availability impact, consistent with a local denial of service.
Which Ubuntu kernel package variants are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-fips, and ubuntu/linux-azure-fde.
