UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50188: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: phy: dp83869: fix memory corruption when enabling fiber When configuring the fiber port, the DP83869 PHY driver incorrectly calls linkmodesetbit() with a bit mask (1 << 10) rather than a bit number (10). This corrupts some other memory location -- in case of arm64 the priv pointer in the same structure. Since the advertising flags are updated from supported at the end of the function the incorrect line isn't needed at all and can be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are affected only when using the DP83869 PHY driver and configuring its fiber port. The issue is tied to the fiber-port configuration path.
What access would an attacker need to exploit it?
The supplied vector indicates local access, low attack complexity, low privileges, and no user interaction. The impact is denial of service; confidentiality and integrity impacts are listed as none.
What is the practical effect of the bug?
Enabling or configuring the DP83869 fiber port can corrupt memory because the driver passes a bit mask where a bit number is expected. On arm64, the corrupted location can be the priv pointer in the same structure.
Is there a configuration workaround if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
Avoid enabling or configuring the DP83869 PHY fiber port. The vulnerable operation is in the fiber-port configuration path.
