UBUNTU-CVE-2024-50296: Null Pointer Dereference

Published Nov 19, 2024
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: hns3: fix kernel crash when uninstalling driver When the driver is uninstalled and the VF is disabled concurrently, a kernel crash occurs. The reason is that the two actions call function pcidisablesriov(). The numVFs is checked to determine whether to release the corresponding resources. During the second calling, numVFs is not 0 and the resource release function is called. However, the corresponding resource has been released during the first invoking. Therefore, the problem occurs: [15277.839633][T50670] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000020 ... Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who is exposed to this issue?

Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel variant with the hns3 driver and SR-IOV virtual functions are exposed when driver removal and VF disablement can occur concurrently. The listed affected packages include Ubuntu linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-oracle, linux-fips, and their listed FIPS cloud variants.

2

What conditions are required to trigger the crash?

The hns3 driver must be uninstalled while a VF is disabled concurrently. Both operations invoke pci_disable_sriov(), causing resources to be released twice and leading to a kernel NULL pointer dereference.

3

What is the impact of successful triggering?

Successful triggering causes a kernel crash through a NULL pointer dereference. The provided severity vector indicates availability impact only, with no stated confidentiality or integrity impact.

4

What can be done if patching cannot happen immediately?

Avoid performing hns3 driver uninstallation concurrently with disabling SR-IOV VFs. Coordinate these operations so that only one path invokes SR-IOV disablement at a time.
