UBUNTU-CVE-2024-53127: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Revert "mmc: dwmmc: Fix IDMAC operation with pages bigger than 4K" The commit 8396c793ffdf ("mmc: dwmmc: Fix IDMAC operation with pages bigger than 4K") increased the maxreqsize, even for 4K pages, causing various issues: - Panic booting the kernel/rootfs from an SD card on Rockchip RK3566 - Panic booting the kernel/rootfs from an SD card on StarFive JH7100 - "swiotlb buffer is full" and data corruption on StarFive JH7110 At this stage no fix have been found, so it's probably better to just revert the change. This reverts commit 8396c793ffdf28bb8aee7cfe0891080f8cab7890.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are known to experience this issue?
Reported impacts include kernel or root filesystem boot panics from an SD card on Rockchip RK3566 and StarFive JH7100 systems. StarFive JH7110 systems have also reported swiotlb buffer exhaustion and data corruption.
Does exploitation require remote access or user interaction?
The supplied severity vector indicates local attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. The description specifically associates the issue with the dw_mmc IDMAC path and SD-card boot or I/O scenarios.
What is the mitigation described by the fix?
The resolution is to revert commit 8396c793ffdf, which had increased max_req_size for the dw_mmc driver even on systems using 4K pages. The description states that no alternative fix had been found at that stage.
