UBUNTU-CVE-2024-53150: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Fix out of bounds reads when finding clock sources The current USB-audio driver code doesn't check bLength of each descriptor at traversing for clock descriptors. That is, when a device provides a bogus descriptor with a shorter bLength, the driver might hit out-of-bounds reads. For addressing it, this patch adds sanity checks to the validator functions for the clock descriptor traversal. When the descriptor length is shorter than expected, it's skipped in the loop. For the clock source and clock multiplier descriptors, we can just check bLength against the sizeof() of each descriptor type. OTOH, the clock selector descriptor of UAC2 and UAC3 has an array of bNrInPins elements and two more fields at its tail, hence those have to be checked in addition to the sizeof() check.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are exposed when the USB-audio driver processes clock descriptors from a USB audio device. The listed package families include linux, linux-fips, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp-fips, and linux-realtime.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs local access with low privileges and a USB audio device that supplies malformed clock descriptors. Exploitation does not require user interaction.
What is the impact of a successful exploit?
Malformed short descriptors can cause out-of-bounds reads in the USB-audio driver's clock-source traversal. The reported impact includes high confidentiality impact and high availability impact, with no integrity impact listed.
Is there a mitigation if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
The provided information does not identify a configuration workaround. Reducing access to untrusted USB audio devices would limit the condition described, because the issue is triggered by bogus USB-audio descriptors.
How can I tell whether a system is affected?
Determine whether the system runs one of the listed Ubuntu kernel package families and whether its USB-audio driver can process attached USB audio devices. The supplied data does not include fixed package or kernel version numbers.
