UBUNTU-CVE-2024-56623: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qla2xxx: Fix use after free on unload System crash is observed with stack trace warning of use after free. There are 2 signals to tell dpcthread to terminate (UNLOADING flag and kthreadstop). On setting the UNLOADING flag when dpcthread happens to run at the time and sees the flag, this causes dpcthread to exit and clean up itself. When kthreadstop is called for final cleanup, this causes use after free. Remove UNLOADING signal to terminate dpcthread. Use the kthreadstop as the main signal to exit dpcthread. For the qla2xxx driver, remove the UNLOADING signal as a termination mechanism for dpc_thread and use kthread_stop as the main signal to terminate dpc_thread.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most relevant to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu kernel package and using the qla2xxx SCSI driver are the relevant exposure set. The listed packages include ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-oracle.
What conditions are associated with triggering the flaw?
The issue occurs during qla2xxx driver unload, when the dpc_thread can exit after observing an UNLOADING flag and is then subject to final cleanup through kthread_stop. This sequence can result in a use-after-free and a system crash.
What is the practical impact of successful exploitation?
The reported outcome is a kernel use-after-free during module unload that can crash the system. The supplied severity vector rates the issue as local, requiring low privileges, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
What change resolves the race condition?
The resolution removes the UNLOADING signal as a way to terminate dpc_thread and uses kthread_stop as the main termination signal. This avoids the double-cleanup path that leads to use-after-free.
