UBUNTU-CVE-2024-56769: Low severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: dvb-frontends: dib3000mb: fix uninit-value in dib3000writereg Syzbot reports [1] an uninitialized value issue found by KMSAN in dib3000readreg(). Local u8 rb[2] is used in i2ctransfer() as a read buffer; in case that call fails, the buffer may end up with some undefined values. Since no elaborate error handling is expected in dib3000writereg(), simply zero out rb buffer to mitigate the problem. In the Linux kernel DVB frontend driver dib3000mb, zero-initialize the local u8 rb[2] read buffer in dib3000_read_reg() before passing it to i2c_transfer().
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to encounter this issue?
Systems using the affected Linux kernel DVB frontend path for the DiB3000MB device are the relevant exposure. The reported call trace involves DVB-over-USB initialization and a DiBUSB DiB3000MB frontend.
What condition triggers the uninitialized-value use?
The condition occurs when an I2C transfer used to fill a two-byte read buffer fails, leaving buffer contents potentially undefined. Subsequent handling in the DiB3000MB frontend path can then use that uninitialized data.
Is this remotely exploitable or does it affect confidentiality, integrity, or availability according to the supplied assessment?
The supplied vector indicates no privileges or user interaction are required, but it does not identify a remote attack vector. It also assigns no confidentiality, integrity, or availability impact and rates the issue low risk.
What does the available fix do?
The fix initializes the local two-byte read buffer to zero before it is passed to the I2C transfer operation. This prevents undefined buffer contents from being used if the transfer fails.
