UBUNTU-CVE-2024-57906: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Jan 19, 2025
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: adc: ti-ads8688: fix information leak in triggered buffer The 'buffer' local array is used to push data to user space from a triggered buffer, but it does not set values for inactive channels, as it only uses iioforeachactivechannel() to assign new values. Initialize the array to zero before using it to avoid pushing uninitialized information to userspace.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially exposed if they use the TI ADS8688 ADC driver with triggered buffers. The issue concerns data returned to user space through that driver’s buffer interface.

2

What access would an attacker need?

An attacker needs local access and low privileges. Exploitation does not require user interaction, but it requires access to the affected kernel functionality.

3

What information could be disclosed?

Inactive channels in a triggered buffer may contain uninitialized kernel memory because the buffer array was not fully initialized before being copied to user space. This can result in disclosure of information from kernel memory.

4

How can this be mitigated before an update is available?

Limit local access to systems using the TI ADS8688 ADC driver and avoid exposing its triggered-buffer interface to untrusted users. Systems not using that driver’s triggered buffers are not described as affected by this issue.
